WSOP: Social Media Hits Mid-Series Form, Says Goodbye To Brunson

The completion of the full second week of the 2018 World Series of Poker was a non-stop poker extravaganza. The summer series has reached full throttle as some of the biggest events on the schedule awarded huge sums of life-changing money.

Social media surrounding the series had a few moments of sincerity as poker legend, Doyle Brunson, announced his retirement from tournament play. That said, poker Twitter’s trademark snark was in full form as grinders jumped into event after event, trying to capture gold.

So if you are watching from afar, enjoy the view as here’s a little taste of life at the Rio in week 2.

Brazilian Million

Some of Brazil’s best and brightest talent celebrated Roberly Felicio’s victory in Event #7: $565 Colossus. Felicio defeated the over 13,000 players to take home the first place guaranteed prize of $1,000,000.

Sure, Sang Liu had Roberly Felicio dominated and on the verge of winning Colossus but everyone…EVERYONE…knows that you don’t celebrate until the final card hits the felt. Once again, the poker gods punish the premature celebration in a clip so good it was picked up by ESPN.

Last year’s Millionaire Maker champion Pablo Mariz stormed the halls of the Rio in his Upswing Poker gear, ready to make another million in 2018.

If Mariz is going to repeat, he’d have to go through 2016 WSOP Main Event Champion, Qui Nguyen…and his new hat.

Punch The Ticket

Ever wonder what a first-place cash out ticket looks like? Well, here it is and it looks like all the rest of them. However, for Adam Friedman, winner of Event #18: $10,000 Dealer’s Choice, this little piece of paper was worth $293,275.

Slipping Out The Back

Daniel Negreanu, eager to add another WSOP gold bracelet to his collection, barely missed out in Event #22: $1,500 Eight Game Mix. The superstar finished in third-place for just under $60,000. His agent, hot on his heels, snapped the pic of him headed back to the trailer.

End Of An Era

Doyle “Texas Dolly” Brunson announced his retirement from poker this week. For his last WSOP tournament, he cruised into Event #23: $10,000 No-Limit 2-7 Lowball Draw. 95 players ponied up the buy-in but Doyle was determined to go deep and as he approached the final table, the poker world watched to see if he would clinch bracelet #11.

In the background, a little something special as Doyle and his son Todd Brunson played side by side.

Doyle pulled up a little short, finishing in sixth place for $43,963 for what is expected to be his last appearance at the WSOP. Poker photog Drew Amato captured that moment and snapped what may end up being the photo of the summer.

The moment really hit home for Canadian online superstar Christopher ‘Apotheosis’ Kruk.

It’s Only Week 2

Over 25 events have taken place and we’re not even quite at the halfway point. The voice of PokerGo, Ali Nejad, is going to need a pick-me-up.
