Latest Two PLO Events See Wins for Smith and Costa

Two more huge PGT PLO Series events went to the wire on Monday and Tuesday as PokerStake players battled for profit at the PokerGO Studio at ARIA in Las Vegas. There were deep runs for players such as Alex Foxen, Tyler Brown and the Spanish Pot Limit Omaha specialist Lautaro Guerra, and one PokerStake player moved quickly on to reach the next final table in Sin City.

Costa Banks Big Bucks After Foxen Chop

Event #5 of the PGT PLO Series cost $10,100 to play and featured 116 entries and just 17 places inside the money. It was Christian Roberts who was eliminated on the money bubble, as his stack went to the impressive British player Richard Gryko, who has been consistently excellent throughout the series. Roberts flopped trips but his hand never improved from there, in contrast to Gryko’s, which made a straight using nine-eight on the turn.

Once the bubble burst, players such as Bryce Yockey (16th for $10,700), John Riordan (12th for $20,880) and Nacho Barbero (10th for $20,880). Jesse Lonis busted in ninth place for $27,840, while Gryko’s event eventually came to a conclusion in eighth place for the same amount. Two players still needed to bust for the final table to be reached and after perennial PGT Casher Dylan Linde busted in seventh place for $34,800, it was PokerGO commentator and High Stakes Poker co-presenter Nick Schulman who busted for $41,769 in sixth place.

The final table was led by Christopher Costa, with his initial lead of 9,175,000 chips improved almost instantly, meaning the runaway leader had more chips than his final table opponents combined. Despite this domination, Alex Foxen refused to lie down, taking out Kamel Mokhammad to reduce the field to four. Costa busted Bruno Furth and Jordan Glazer to hold a better than 5:1 chip lead over Foxen heading into their heads-up match but the two duked it out and when almost level chopped the money.

Costa’s full house of nines over jacks eventually sealed the deal as Foxen missed out on the PGT trophy, continuing an 800-day long drought in those terms. Costa won $123,200 but also racked up an incredible $90,000 in bounties, a tally that was unmatched.

Smith Hits Form to Claim Event #6 Title

In Event #6, many of the same players who took on the Progressive Bounty action in the previous event registered for regular PLO fun. Of the 99 total entries that took part, garnering a $990,000 prizepool, only 15 were paid, with Arthur Morris the unfortunate ‘bubble boy’, as he crashed out in 16th place at the hands of Dylan Weisman. Daniel Negreanu (pictured below) sneaked into the money places in 15th for a return of $19,800, falling to the same opponent. Kid Poker had a king but Weisman had two, which went better with the stunning board of Kc5h5s5d5c.

Others to cash included Jim Collopy (14th for $19,800), previous event winner Billy Tarango (12th for $24,750), Weisman himself (11th for $29,700) and Joao Simao, who busted in eighth place for $39,600. The Brazilian was the next to bust before the last table but one player needed to go for the official final table of six to be reached. That player turned out to be Artem Maksimov, as the American lost with pocket kings to the flopped set of Sean Rafael.

In the final, Rafael led the field with almost double his nearest rival’s chips, and initially began in exact the same way he’d ended the previous night, taking out PokerGO favorite Sam Soverel in sixth place for $49,500. Dylan Smith began his ascent to glory next, though, taking out perennial PLO dangerman Lautaro Guerra in fifth place for $64,350. Smith took out Stefan Christopher (4th for $89,100) and Tyler Brown (3rd for $113,850) too, ahead of a heads-up where he had double the chips of Rafael. Soon, he had them all, making Broadway on the turn of a board where Rafael flopped top pair and it was Smith who won over a aquarter of a million dollars and the latest PGT PLO title.

Arieh and Hendrix Still in the Mix

With several events still to come, there are a plethora of top PLO players still hoping to emulate Daniel Negreanu and Chino Rheem in winning trophies at the 2025 PGT PLO Series. Josh Arieh is flying high heading into the next final table of the series, with other players such as Hawaiian poker hero Adam Hendrix also playing in the remaining PGT PLO Series.

This week, while we’ve been focusing on the Pot Limit Omaha action taking place at the PokerGO Studio at ARIA, thoughts have also turned to the U.S. Poker Open. The PokerStake player Aram Zobian was the overall leaderboard winner in 2024, and the Armenian-American spoke with us in detail this week about his plans to sell action to this year’s series.
